AHHHH…..Alpacas

This magnificent camelid hails from the Andes in Peru and was raised by the ancient Inca civilization in the 1400’s.  The two treasures of the Inca’s were gold and cloth.  Gold, or “sweat of the sun” was a useful metal and was used abundantly for elaborate utensils, ornaments, weapons and general aesthetics.  However, their real wealth (as they saw it) was cloth made from the fiber of Alpacas and Llamas.  They wove the fleece into fabric for roofs, clothing and blankets, and made cords to support their bridges.  Their counting system consisted of knots on strands of wool; communication was often accomplished in styles of hand-weaving; and wages were paid in cloth, not gold.

Alpaca fleece today is measured in microns—the lower the number, the finer and softer the fleece is, making it more desirable.  The rich, soft feel of the sheared fiber spun into yarn and made into sweaters and garments is incredible.

At Inca Gold Alpacas we are dedicated to breeding our animals to produce the finest of fiber, best of temperament, correct conformation and bite.  We do this by carefully selecting our breeding stock.

We invite you to browse through our website to view these precious camelids that are a part of our family.  Capture their beauty, grace and personalities and catch the “Alpaca Fever”.

Note:  The Inca’s were also responsible for developing 240 varieties of the potato and 20 varieties of corn!  Just thought you might want to know!
